Fondly known as โAbhiโ among the people of Goregaon, A. B. Goregaokar English School is a Marathi-medium school and an integral part of Goregaonโs educational landscape. Over the years, countless children and youngsters, as well as alumni in their forties, fifties, sixties and even those above eighty, have proudly carried the identity of being students of โAbhiโ.
In 1940, a few visionary educationists came together with the thought that children in Goregaon should have access to secondary education, and founded the school. Soon after, they established The Shikshan Mandal, Goregaon. The Mandal began offering pre-primary and primary education in Marathi medium from 1999โ2000 onwards.
Guided by its motto, โKala, Dnyan, Kreedaโ (Art, Knowledge, Sport), the school has shaped generations of students. The school seamlessly integrates arts and sports with rigorous academics, fostering life skills and holistic development.
Today, more than 700 students learn across our three schools: Dosibai Jeeeeibhoy Balvihar, Dosibai Jeeeeibhoy Prathamik Shala, and A. B. Goregaokar English School. A fully equipped Kamala Mafatlal Mehta Computer Center facilitates digital literacy by offering regular access to computers. Our schoolโs spacious playground is indeed a source of great pride. It has helped nurture many young athletes over the years.
Our commitment to education extends beyond our school gates. The P. B. Samant Shikshansamruddhi Prayas was established to bring together organizations, teachers, and students from various educational institutions. This initiative encourages the sharing of knowledge and experiences, mutual learning and innovative approaches to quality education. Together, these initiatives have made the Faiba Vimalaben Kothari Educational Complex a vibrant centre of learning, innovation and collaboration.
Our school is defined by a spirit of experimentation, a constant search for new ideas and a firm belief in the holistic development of every child. Where learning goes beyond textbooks and conventional teaching methods. It develops through experience, observation, creativity, and the joy of discovery. For every child, our school is more than a place to learn. It is a welcoming space where every child can discover themselves, explore new experiences, and grow without any fear.
Lend a hand
For more than eight decades, The Shikshan Mandal, Goregaon has devotedly provided meaningful and holistic educational opportunities to children. Today, across its three schools, students benefit from classroom learning alongside opportunities in technology, sport, arts and other fields. Sustaining and enriching these opportunities requires additional resources beyond government funding.
The Shikshan Mandal, Goregaon's both primary and secondary schools, receive government grants. However, beyond teachersโ salaries, funding for non-salary expenses is either not provided or grossly inadequate. This makes it extremely difficult to maintain essential facilities and uphold the quality of educational activities in the schools.
Where do we need support?
For staff salaries
The government does not provide enough teaching and non-teaching staff to deliver quality education. Therefore, the Mandal must bear the cost of nearly 20 additional staff members. These include subject teachers, computer instructors, a librarian, laboratory assistants, sports coaches, counsellors and support staff. The pre-primary section (Balvihaar) does not receive any government grants. The Mandal bears its entire operating cost, including the salaries of 10 teachers. The actual cost of education is nearly five times the fee charged. Yet the fees are kept affordable, considering the financial circumstances of pupilsโ families.
Technology
Across the three schools, pupils, teachers, and administrative staff currently use more than 70 computers. These need periodic replacement. The ongoing maintenance of these computers also costs considerable money.
Maintenance and improvement of school buildings
The school buildings have been well maintained over the years. Maintaining and improving the buildings requires regular financial support.
Support for the sports ground
Our school has a spacious sports ground. Every few years, the ground needs to be raised and leveled, which is a considerable expense. Sports equipment and, in particular, coachesโ fees add to the cost of providing quality sporting opportunities.
Financial assistance is essential to sustain these initiatives. However, we also believe the skills, knowledge, and experience our former students can share with the school are equally important.
